I love stories about travelers--sojourners, hitchhikers, migrants, wandering orphans--so the story of the NPR journalist's hitchhiker was a must read. The only problem with it was it was TOO SHORT! More! More!
I actually hand-wrote a rather long story about a migrant orphan in the Depression about 7 years ago. I've written better, but actually, I might recycle it sometime and see how it improves.
My main problem with hikehiker stories is that they usually involve too many...adult activities...in all forms or violence.
If you're into wanderers, try:
The Hobbit
Adam of the Road
Northwest Passage
Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt
The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz
